Is it possible to learn ballet as an adult?

by admin on November 21, 2009

I am 15 and have never taken ballet lessons. But, I’ve been teaching myself the last year or so through observation and internet research. I probably can’t take real lessons until I’m 18 or so. I was wondering if starting out ballet as an adult, will I be able to become just as good as someone who started at 3? Can I still learn to dance en pointe (in time of course). Thanks ahead!

I think it’s possible to learn ballet at 18; however, keep in mind that you probably won’t be as flexible as a young adult as you would have been at age 3 (you won’t be as un-self-conscious, either!) That said, you still could enjoy the dance form at your age, and it would help keep you limber when you turn into an adult!

it is possible to start ballet at any age! You will have to work really hard for a while, though, to catch up to the people who started at three, but after a while, you will get as good as them! I admit it will be a disatvantage, but if you really want it, you will get it!
BEST OF LUCK!!!

Yes! You can learn as an adult! I started at 25.

My advice to you is not to teach yourself. You will develop bad habits that will become so difficult to break. If you can, enroll in just one ballet class per week, even if just for a little while, so you learn how to do things properly. If you cannot, just stick to stretching until you can. There are many things to ballet that are so fundamental, but not at all obvious like turnout, not sickling your feet, tucking under your pelvis, etc. Even if you have done your research, you may think you are tucking under and not sickling, but chances are you probably are.

Realistically, it is unlikely you will get as good as someone who has been doing ballet their whole life because when you start that young, your body is shapeable. Ballet shapes your bones and your muscles. When you are older, this is not possible. You have to deal with what you have. You can however become quite good…and you will enjoy it!

Yes…if you are determined. You won’t be as good as the professionals but you can still be quite good!

I’m 16 and did gymnastics my whole life, but last year I started doing ballet instead. I’m on pointe and everything is going really. My teachers even think it’s a possibility for me to be accepted into a company. Right now I’m a junior in high school.

Though keep in mind the gymnastics helped me a lot…I was already strong and very flexible. But don’t give up!
