why are there ballet positions? what is their purpose?

by admin on March 1, 2010

I’m not sure if I’m right on it or if I even worded it correctly. I’m making a speech about it and I just want to double check myself.

because they connect everything. and youre always in a position if youre not dancing. before you do a move, you cant just stand there. you need to be in a position… its what you do when youre not doing…. something fancy. its like walking or breathing.

for example, you cant do a glissade assemble without going through fifth. what are the teachers going to tell you, “cross your legs”?

they help you put every thing together.
for example:
if you were to go do a jump, how would you know how to land.?
you wouldn’t. you would just plop down.

It’s all with coordination and grace.
If your teacher said, “Do a pirouette!”
Most of the girls or guys would fall on their asses because they wouldn’t have a prep, they’d just have a momentum and lose their balance.
If you’re just standing there , you don’t really look like you know what you’re doing either.

They help you with everything. How to land jumps, how to start glissades, and everything in between. Also, each position stretched a different muscle when you plie or releve. Hope this helped!

I can tell you why they were invented. Because one of the kings in France, I believe, wanted to be able to show off his calves. So if you notice, that in every position, you’re showing your calves. I don’t know if that helps you at all, but that’s one thing I definitely remember, besides what the positions are.
