Is it ever too late to learn Ballet?

by admin on March 8, 2010

I’m 17 years old and I want to learn ballet now that I will be having time.
I’ve been busy all these years with school, and since I’ll be graduating
High School next June I want to learn ballet since I’ll have more time.

Ballet Dancers, do you think it’s too late to learn ballet? Will I have to
take classes with 3 or 5 year olds?

they have teen/adult classes at most studios, so it’s never too late. however, don’t plan on having a dance career starting that late. you can start dancing at any point and get pretty good, too. it’s just hard to do it professionally that way.

Hi, I went through the same thing you’re going through. I’m 13, and I started dance last year. I advanced really quickly because I worked so hard, and I’m going on pointe next year. I’m on two dance teams and I dance eight hours a week. You will not have to take a class with five year olds, most studios offer older classes. As the previous answerer said, don’t plan on going professional. But ballet can always be a wonderful hobby for all ages! Have fun! :)

i agree with the two answers above me.i do ballet and ive danced since i was little and would like to become a prefessional. they have adult classes at most studios and although it is too late to persue dancing as a career, its never to late to learn! ballet is great exercise and its super fun. i just helped two of my 17 year old friends sign up for adult class..they wanted to try it out to help them with their other sports as ballet improves flexibility, strength and balance. however, they ended up liking the classes a lot and now they go every week!
also my 50 year old mom takes classes sometimes and loves them!
so dont hesitate to dance, if thats what you want to do!!
good luck!
:]
ps!
one thing my friends and my mom both told me was that its difficult to pick up the combinations at first–its hard to remember all the steps and what order they go in. so your first few classes will probably be a little challenging but dont be discouraged! it will take some time.
:]

No, it’s never too late to learn ballet. most schools offer classes for older students. I teach a basic ballet class at my local studio and on of the students is a mother of one of my ballet classmates! you can start ballet recreationally at any age, but starting from scratch at 17 there is not a good chance you could take it professionally. But go for it! ballet is awesome excercize and it’s a lot of fun!

No you shouldn’t be dancing with 3 year olds. There should be classes with your age that hasn’t danced before. But you shouldn’t expect to be “amazing” the first time you try it but its never to late.

Naturally it is never to late to learn ballet. Take some older people (60+) for example, taking up French lessons or participating in aerobics.

Just do what makes you happy!
